I just discovered this future star Wednesday night when he played SUPERGOODMUSIC’s Superdope Wednesday event at The Viper Room. As the opener for a heavy hip-hop slate, the young Dean Risko delivered a soulful, hip-hop esque set of quasi-pop tunes – including “Trouble.” The 23 year old Johannesburg, South Africa native sings, raps and even has a little b-boy steeze wrapped up in his skinny, stylishly dressed frame.
Risko reminds me a lot of Mike Posner, but with lyrics that are not nearly as cheesy and a swagger that seems a bit more authentic. Maybe its because Risko is a better dancer, maybe its because Risko is more physically attractive, or maybe its just because Risko isn’t big yet – butAnd I mean no disrespect to Posner – Risko just does what Posner does better than Posner does it.
His Trouble EP is his first official release and is available for download/purchase at deanrisko.bandcamp.com
