Hey SUPERGOODMUSIC Fans and Family -
Its funny when September comes around and you think summer is almost over. With NCAA football season kicking off and college campuses repopulating, you'd think it was already autumn, but with 2 festivals (Pacific Festival, FYF) this weekend and an extended holiday it is far from it.
To celebrate the continued fun in the sun we have a handful of fresh new downloads for you - including some full on albums from Signal Path, Big Gigantic, Dee Goodz and Freddie Gibbs, as well as a fresh new remix of Futurecop! and Keith Masters, two great remixes from the RAC and that hot and fresh Wiz Khalifa.
We're happy to see all the great buzz surrounding LA talent we've been touting for a while, from Saint Motel and their Sunset Strip Music Festival performance and upcoming Morning Becomes Eclectic airtime to 12th Planet and his upcoming video and music releases all the way to Orgone touring all over the country and getting lots of love from funk fans nationwide, to Young The Giant and their run of opening for Marina & The Diamonds (culminating at the El Rey next week). It makes us happy to see LA based talent doing well at home and elsewhere.
And it makes us happy when you get to see that talent! We don't have any giveaways for shows this week as of publication time, but check our twitter and facebook in case that changes midweek. We do have Free Tickets from Live Nation for later in the month and that offering is described in a little block just to your right --->
We've got some recs and editorials below, as well as some great pictures. If you want to see more shots from our travels, we published a great article from Lauren Lomma about Sunset Strip Music Festival on our blog earlier in the week complete with some phenomenal photography from Megan Thompson. Check those out and more at our blog at www.supergoodmusic.com/blog.html
See you around town and Happy Rosh to our Jewish readers!

SUPERGOOD RECOMMENDATIONS by BOOMD

This week heats up for any fan of indie and/or electro music, and especially for fans of the fusion of both. Not only do we have Pacific Festival OC and FYF this weekend, the former being more electro and the latter being more indie, but there are some pre-festival shows on Friday and post festival shows (Free Energy at The Viper Room) that will undoubtedly be the whip.
If you need some live music in your life this week - here's what I suggest:
On September's first Friday, you could check out that aforementioned indie electro sound downtown with me when Delorean plays at The Grand Star Jazz Club. Designer Drugs will be throwing their own indie hipster party at Avalon while Afghan Raiders gets the dance floor dirty at Spaceland. Cold Cave at Detroit Bar is a good choice as well. If you like hip-hop and jam fusion, Band of Brotherz at The Mint is probably a good look - the group's record was produced by the Dead's Bob Weir.
Saturday brings day 1 of the Pacific Festival. If you like indie electro dance music, you'd be foolish not to go. Miami Horror makes their US debut, Steve Aoki, The Sounds, Classixx, Them Jeans, Casette, Dan Sena and more are playing - plus Chiddy Bang and a silent disco. It's a no-brainer and the line-up is better than FYF Fest if you like to dance, especially since it goes two hours later. FYF, where sounds are done by midnight, is headlined by Rapture, and also includes !!!, Delorean, School of Seven Bells, Best Coast, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, and many other artists that would please most east side indie hipsters. FYF also boasts a comedy tent and an opportunity to purchase the FYF After Party tickets. If you only like to dance to funk and vinyl, you're cheap, or both than the weekly free Funky Sole at Echo is where I'd recommend.
Sunday, the FYF After Party with Rapture and Freedia at Echoplex is probably where it's at for the indie electro set. Pacific Festival down in OC will still be rocking strong - not with the same sounds as the day before, rather with the dub-alicious vibrations of Rebelution, The Expendables, Aggrolites and others. The festival ends earlier that night and leaves enough time to check out Band of Brotherz at The Central SAPC if you missed them Friday.
Monday, or what I like to think of as Free Live Music Day, doesn't boast any top to bottom good line-up like last week, but it does start Eastern Conference Champions' month long residency at Spaceland. It's my choice for the night over Year Long Disaster at Bootleg Theater if you're in that neighborhood. I will be at Carbon in Culver City for Funkmosphere; Dam Funk has been as smooth as Johnny Walker Blue recently.
Tuesday I will definitely be at the Viper Room to see Philadelphia buzz band Free Energy. The east coasters, who've earned critical acclaim from publications like Spin and Rolling Stone, will most likely be raging tunes from their album Stuck on Nothing. They will be joined by Killers soundalikes from Las Vegas, Imagine Dragons and local band, Links. Elsewhere on Tuesday is, as always, Dim Mak Tuesdays at Cinespace where Kisses and residents Them Jeans and Dan Oh are slated to play. Interpol is playing for free at Space 15 Twenty if you buy their album from a participating retailer and get a special bracelet....so get on that if you buy albums. If indie rock or electro is not your thing, than Quantic at Commonwealth Lounge might interest you if you like eclectic sounds. For the rasta heads, Israel Vibrations is playing at Saint Rocke.
Wednesday Israel Vibrations come inland to channel Selassie at The Roxy. for indie folky mellow music, Ray LaMontagne is playing at The Greek Theatre. If you like fast and danceable like I do - I suggest you throw your i-pod on and go for a run.
Thursday one of the hottest MCS in the hip-hop game, Jay Electronica, makes his Sunset Strip debut. Being the recent mate of Erykah Badu, it is more than just his lyrical skills that have gained him attention. On this night, his ability to weave words will leave those who attend undoubtedly impressed. If you can't handle his floetry, Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven at Echoplex is probably worth the effort. We're not saying these are the only shows, just the ones that have our stamp of approval. As usual, there is a full list of shows on the right. The ones in bold we are confident will be interesting to say the least. To see what is coming up several weeks down the road, just check on the radar further below.

Go FREE or Stay Home - An Open Letter to Artists by Brandon Dorsky, Esq.
Dear Artist,
You may agree or disagree with what I am about to say, but what I'm saying is the truth. If you are an artist trying to break it out there, you need to give away your music for free initially. You are trying to pull in fans from an overesaturated market and you need some way to do it. I'm telling you, giving away good music for free is the key to your success.
Sure, this means you have to invest in making the music that is good enough to give away and you are not going to immediately recover your investment - but, isn't that the cost you pay for the dream (or the attempt) of becoming a professional musician? Other professionals take the same leap of faith when they go to graduate school and invest a lot in their education in the hopes of having the job that will compensate them for their investment and time.
Yes, you could charge for your music. But, why am I going to pay for YOUR music when I've barely ever heard of YOU in an over-saturated market? When many other people are going to give me their music or some other artists' music, perhaps YOURS, for free? Why don't you just make it easy for me to get YOUR music from YOU? That makes me like you.
Maybe we could start a facebook friendship. I'm definitely more inclined to do it if you are giving me something for free. Lead me to believe I'm getting it for free and then make me "like" you on facebook or "follow" you on twitter to get the download. I might even give you my e-mail address. Get something from me in return...but don't ask for money.
Take an e-mail, give a song. I've advised a few artists to do this - and for the most part - it is a
huge success (for example: Foster The People - "Pumped Up Kicks"). It is free to start the relationship - but as you grow, it won't be free to maintain it. Who knows how you decide to structure this relationship. There are
easily a few dozen ways (realistically hundreds) that you could monetize
the direct relationship with your fans as you grow. Trust me. I've
thought about it. I'm an artist manager and an entertainment lawyer.
If you don't give it to me for free, I've got every incentive to listen to another artist who will. But if you give it to me for free and it is good, I've got every incentive to keep coming back to your website or your twitter or your facebook to get free music. I've got every incentive to tell my friends about it because everyone likes free things if they are high quality - music or not.
And what do you have to lose by giving it to me for free? Its not like if you give it to me for free that I am going to give it away for profit. This isn't the '90s where people are selling bootleg burnt CDs for cash.
My point is that if it is free and it is good - I'm going to want to check back for more free good stuff. It's like half the reason people go to Whole Foods - it might cost a little bit more for the produce - but you might get some free cheese or fruit (or both!) that is like palate ecstasy. Going to your website might cost me a little more time - but if there is free music and it is good - I'm going to come back.
If I am coming back, you are getting traffic and you can monetize that traffic. You can host ads on YOUR site. Integrate branding on YOUR site. Sell your merchandise on YOUR site. Exclusively release tickets on YOUR site.
Leak the music to me slowly (a la Pretty Lights - 3 EPs in a year). Leak it to me on a weekly basis (didn't Kanye just claim to be doing this?). Make me want to continually come back to YOUR site or YOUR facebook page or YOUR twitter account. Take ownership of OUR relationship
Once I'm visiting YOUR page, you can easily tell me about your concerts. If I've already got your music for free and a handful of it, I not only appreciate your generosity - I feel obliged to come support. I'd feel guilty to not come see your show. You rock a good show and I'm coming back time and time again. You rock a bad show and at least I paid once - so theoretically you recovered some of your investment.
Look at Derek Vincent Smith AKA Pretty Lights. All of his music has been available for free on his website at one point or another. Every album. Every EP. He went from making $500 (verified) a night in guarantees in 2008 to $10,000-$20,000 a night (and booking 40 night runs) in less than two years. All he did was make dope music and give it away for free. It spread like wildfire from there. His last EP did 35,000 free downloads (of the whole EP) in its first week. Those numbers would get you on Billboard Top 10 today!
Sure he is not making money on those 35,000 downloads - but the dude grosses a half million dollars while traveling the country for two months playing music. Isn't that what any aspiring musician dreams of? Isn't that why you took the risk of being a musician?
So take, the risk, forgo that income on the first few singles, EPs, albums - whatever. Give the music away for free.
Best,
Brandon Dorsky, Esq.
Signal Path, Big Gigantic, Pretty Lights, Freddie Gibbs and Dee Goodz are all offering full albums, EPs or mixtapes in our download links section above.
FYI, Pretty Lights is headlining The Wiltern on November 26th.

Pacific Festival OC - Go Early/Stay Late
Are you going to Pacific Festival? If the answer is still no - you can correct that mistake by going here for tickets. If the answer is yes and you're not already down in the OC, then give yourself ample time to get there. We advise kicking off the first morning of your Labor Day weekend early and driving down there in the early AM because they will be serving up bottomless flutes of Mimosa from 11 to 2 each morning. Sure, the NCAA football season more or less kicks off Saturday morning - but if you were going to go to the festival all day you probably don't care about that enough to keep you from getting to the festival in time for the cheap champ or DJ Miles, Dan Sena, Dr. Schlongo and the handful of artists playing before the sun goes down. Once that sun goes down, I'm pretty sure Skullcandy is sponsoring a silent disco, along with some jaw dropping sets from Steve Aoki, The Sounds and Classixx. With a Chiddy Bang hip-hop party and Miami Horror's U.S. Live Debut taboot - Saturday looks to be a full on experience and one that you don't want to cut short! Sunday packs a totally different vibe, but once again hosts early morning fine champagne (can't guarantee the fine part of that statement). With a much more dubbed out vibe on day 2, you might find people curing their Day 1 hangover with OC's finest OGs as they chillax to the soul reggae sounds of The Expendables and Rebelution. With tour dates running through November 12th and no other schedule So Cal performances, Sunday may be the last time you get to see Rebelution around LA in 2010. That alone makes it worth the second day trip.
If you're there - mention @boomd in a tweet. He'll be on location, spreading the SUPERGOODMUSIC love.

Risers Step It Up at Filter Party
Risers debuted their live sounds for the world on Wednesday night, and by world I mean FILTER staff, insiders, west-siders and some fashionistas in Santa Monica. Opening for another indie rock band, Delta Spirit, Risers took to the makeshift stage at Santa Monica Civic Center just before 8 pm on Wednesday night.
Consisting of vocalists Sean (keys) and Josh (guitar), both formerly of Anglos, as well as three other musicians, Risers pleased the crowd with their blend of indie rock. Part folky, part psychedelic, part antehmic, 100% indie - the band was very good. Seemingly coming from nowhere they definitely held their own on an outdoor stage at a chilly hipster FILTER party.
Now that we've heard of Risers and re-earthed their song "Cleopatra" (actually recorded under the band name Anglos), we're looking forward to more from these guys. Their big bodied music is perfect for a movie score or credits - so hopefully they'll be the credit music to the next great American television or cinema classic.
Delta Spirit commenced their rockdown as the night continued to chill and get misty (there was light rain sprinkles). The crowd seemed to thicken a bit for them - perhaps to incubate the collective heat, but more likely to see the quintet in action. Not knowing any of their material well enough to sing along - I watched as a handful of girls mouthed words along with the lead vocalist. In addition to being multi-talented (singer, harmonica and guitar), he had a lot of enthusiasm and an aggressive head bang. Rotating instruments amongst each other and maintaining a demeanor as
cool as the coastal air, Delta Spirit rocked the crowd until they
trickled out to the all you can bowl after party.
