Beach Ball Festival

Summer really closes out this weekend.  Your print calendars actually convert to autumn or fall pictures, most schools have started by now, and I think the 21st is actually the “official” end of summer.  Plus – its the weekend of the last “summer” themed music event at Santa Monica PierBeach Ball Festival.

KCRW recruited a gang of soul maestros to serenade beachside crowds in the late afternoon on Saturday and Sunday.  Saturday – Aloe Blacc and his everyday homeless man’s anthem “I Need a Dollar” close out a bill that includes Allen Stone, Lee Fields & The Expressions, Maceo Parker and more.  Funky Sole DJs kick off the festivities at 3 pm.  The same time schedule follows Sunday – but soul is replaced by dub and reggae vibes and the Dub Club crew takes control of the decks from the Funky Sole brothers.  Sunday Sly & Robbie headline after The Skatalites, Michael Rose and a few others perform.  A full list of acts and set times can be found here.
